Engineered timber gives you the grain, depth and warmth of real hardwood with a layered construction that copes far better with Melbourne's temperature and humidity swings than solid boards. TMBR supplies and installs engineered oak and Australian species across Melbourne, with samples brought to your home before you commit to anything.

Why choose engineered timber

  • Genuine timber, genuine warmth. The surface is real oak, spotted gum or blackbutt, so every board carries natural variation in grain and tone.
  • More stable than solid timber. The cross-laminated core resists cupping, gapping and warping through seasonal changes.
  • It can be refinished. A decent wear layer can be sanded and recoated over its life to refresh the floor or change the colour.
  • Suits more subfloors. Engineered boards can be floated or glued over concrete slabs and timber subfloors alike.
  • A premium, considered look. Wide oak boards or rich Australian species read as a high-end finish in living and entertaining spaces.

Species and finishes

European oak is the most popular choice for a reason. It takes stains and finishes beautifully, from pale Scandinavian tones through warm honey to deep smoked browns. Our Oak Privé range covers refined European and French oak options.

Australian species such as spotted gum and blackbutt bring stronger grain, natural colour movement and a distinctly local character. See the Australian Timbers range.

Matt and ultra-matt finishes are dominant right now because they hide everyday wear and keep the timber looking natural. The same board can feel completely different in your light than in a shop, which is exactly why we bring samples to your home.

Where engineered timber works best

Engineered timber is ideal for the dry, lived-in parts of a home: living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas, hallways and studies. It can work in kitchens with sensible habits around spills. For laundries, bathrooms and other wet areas, a waterproof floor like hybrid or vinyl plank is the better call, and many clients combine the two across the home.

Worth knowing: real timber is softer than a hybrid wear layer, so it will pick up marks over time, and quality engineered boards cost more than hybrid or laminate. In exchange you get a floor that is genuinely timber and can be refinished rather than replaced. Our engineered timber vs hybrid guide compares them room by room.

See it in a real Melbourne home

This Doncaster East home runs smoked engineered oak herringbone through the entry, kitchen, living zones and main bedroom. Every board was chosen on site with our mobile showroom, then supplied and installed by our team. See the full project.

Supply and installation, one team

Timber rewards careful installation. We measure and inspect the subfloor, level and moisture-test it, allow for acclimatisation where the product needs it, then lay the floor floating or direct-stick, whichever suits the board and slab. The same fully insured Melbourne team handles everything from samples to final trims, across the inner suburbs, the east from Hawthorn to Doncaster, bayside and beyond, with evening and weekend visits available.

Engineered timber FAQs

Can I call to get a quick quote?+

Yes. Call 0449 156 789 with your room sizes and preferred look, and we will give you a realistic ballpark for supply and installation. A free in-home measure then confirms a fixed, itemised price.

Can you talk me through options over the phone?+

Absolutely. We will help you choose between oak and Australian species, explain wear layers and finishes, and then bring a shortlist of samples to your home to compare against your walls, cabinetry and light.

Is engineered timber real timber?+

Yes. The surface is a genuine hardwood veneer, the same oak or Australian species you would get in a solid floor, bonded to a stable layered core that handles Melbourne's climate with less movement.

Can engineered timber be sanded and refinished?+

Usually yes, depending on the veneer thickness. A thicker wear layer can be sanded and recoated a few times over its life. We will point out the wear layer on every product you shortlist.

Can engineered timber go in a kitchen?+

It can, provided spills are wiped promptly and standing water is avoided. For laundries and bathrooms we recommend a waterproof floor such as hybrid or vinyl plank instead.
