A full-home transformation in Doncaster East

This double-storey home in Doncaster East called for flooring that could carry a large, light-filled floor plan without feeling cold. The owners wanted timber warmth and a sense of occasion downstairs, and quiet comfort upstairs where the family actually sleeps and unwinds. We brought the full range to the house, compared options in the real rooms and light, then supplied and installed throughout.

The brief

The home is generous and formal, with high ceilings, panelled walls and sheer-dressed windows. A single flooring choice would have felt flat across so many rooms, so we planned two complementary finishes: a refined timber for the living and circulation zones, and a soft, warm carpet for the private spaces. The goal was a calm, cohesive palette that reads as one considered home rather than a series of separate rooms.

Engineered oak herringbone through the living zones

The ground floor is laid in a smoked European oak in a herringbone parquetry pattern. Herringbone gives the formal living, lounge and dining areas a tailored, classic feel that suits the architecture, while the deep oak tone grounds the pale walls and joinery. Engineered construction was the practical choice here: it brings the authenticity of real engineered oak with the stability a large slab and Melbourne's seasonal swings demand.

In the lounge, the herringbone runs up to a marble fireplace, and the dark floor lets the stone and the soft furnishings do the talking. Because the same floor flows through the entry, hallway and open-plan living, the eye moves through the home without interruption.

A staircase as the centrepiece

The curved staircase is the heart of the entry. Solid timber treads and a hand-finished handrail were matched to the herringbone below, and paired with a wrought-iron balustrade for a classic, enduring look. Getting the timber tones to sit together across the floor, treads and rail took careful selection, which is exactly the kind of decision that is easier to make with samples in the actual space.

Plush wool carpet upstairs

Upstairs, and in the bedrooms, we laid a plush wool carpet in a soft greige. Wool brings genuine warmth and a quiet, comfortable feel underfoot, and it helps soften sound in a large home with hard surfaces elsewhere. In the main bedroom the carpet sets a restful tone under the panelled feature wall, and the upstairs retreat stays comfortable for everyday family life.

Chosen at home, installed by one team

Every finish in this home was chosen on site through our mobile showroom, beside the cabinetry, stone and natural light it had to work with. From there our local, fully insured team handled the supply and installation end to end, including subfloor preparation, the herringbone set-out and the carpet to the bedrooms and stairs. The result is a home where the flooring feels intentional in every room.
